Overview and Testing
Safe Life Defense has released Hyperline armor, touted as the company’s thinnest body armor to date at just 0.19 inches thick—equivalent to five stacked pennies or a No. 2 pencil. Rated Level 3A (HG2), it weighs five pounds for the panels or six pounds with the concealable carrier, providing full front, back, and side coverage. The reviewer, describing himself as ‘the fattest reviewer that they know,’ subjected the vest to rigorous testing on thick rubber dummies mimicking human mass.
The armor withstood an intense gauntlet: .22LR, 9mm FMJ and self-defense, .45 ACP, .38 Special, .357 from a lever action, .454 Casull, birdshot, and a shotgun slug. Even full-auto fire from a Glock 17 (17 rounds center mass) and two 30-round MP5 magazines (over 70 rounds stacked in one spot) were mostly stopped, with only a couple penetrating after extreme abuse. Additional tests defeated .44 Magnum, 5.7 FN, and .22 TCM. ‘I was genuinely frustrated because it stopped all the stuff that I brought,’ the host admitted.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Ultra-lightweight (5-6 lbs) for extended wear and mobility
- Exceptional thinness aids concealability, even under a t-shirt: ‘It’s almost going to be concealable even for me… I just look like I’m double fat that day’
- Superior bullet-stopping outperforms tested panels, with low backface deformation
- Full coverage and U.S.-sourced/manufactured materials
Cons:
- Pricey at $999, though a four-pay option exists: ‘You bitched about [overseas manufacturing] so now it’s time to knuckle up and put your wallet where your mouth is’
- Not NIJ-certified, despite testing to NIJ standards at approved lab Oregon Ballistic Laboratories
Analysis and Compatibility
Disassembly revealed innovative multi-material construction, including tough Dyneema, yielding 1 lb 4.2 oz of shrapnel from extracted bullets. The host praised its compliance and potential paired with Level 3 FRASS plates to stop rifle rounds like 7.62×39 and 5.56. It has become his ‘go-to setup,’ highlighting real-world wearability over bulkier alternatives.
