This week on TFB’s Behind the Gun Podcast, I’m joined by Tom Willingham, founder and CEO of Range USA, the largest indoor gun range and firearms retail chain in the country. Tom’s path here is anything but predictable — he spent his career as a commercial real estate appraiser in Cincinnati before a frustrating first visit to a gun shop at age 51 convinced him there had to be a better way to do this. He opened his first store in Blue Ash, Ohio, in 2012 on personal savings and a business plan sketched on the back of an envelope, and Range USA has since grown to 51 locations across 14 states, including a brand-new store that just opened in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. We talk through that whole path, what Range USA’s Ohio roots still mean for how the company runs today, and I get to bring in a little of my own experience as a Range USA customer along the way for a fun conversation with one of the most successful indoor range owners in the country.
