The Tek-Lok spacer and mounting-plate collection is a textbook example of how the 2A community turns a single, widely adopted mounting standard into an entire ecosystem of incremental improvements. Instead of waiting for holster makers to redesign their molds every time a shooter wants a different cant or ride height, these plates let the end user add that geometry in a few grams of printed polymer and a handful of M4 screws. The result is a modular “middle layer” that keeps the original holster intact while giving competition shooters the fine-grained adjustments they need for IDPA, USPSA, or IPSC stages—without ever drilling a new hole or voiding a warranty.

What makes the approach especially clever is its refusal to chase universality. Rather than one “do-everything” plate, the designer produced purpose-built variants: a three-hole Comp-Tac adapter that thickens the mounting zone for extra strength, a six-hole version that adds vertical drop, and a 15-degree canted plate that satisfies IDPA’s forward-draw preference. By standardizing on the same 8-32 Chicago screws already found in most Kydex rigs, the plates slot into existing workflows and spare-parts bins. That kind of backward compatibility is what keeps small-batch innovation viable in a market dominated by big-name holster brands.

For the broader Second Amendment community, the takeaway is straightforward: open standards plus open-source hardware multiply freedom of choice. A single Tek-Lok interface now supports dozens of ride-height, cant, and offset combinations that would otherwise require buying an entirely new holster for each discipline. As more shooters adopt these plates, the pressure on manufacturers to lock down proprietary mounting patterns will only increase—pushing the industry toward greater interoperability rather than walled-garden ecosystems. In short, the humble spacer plate is quietly doing what the 2A community has always done best: taking a good idea and making it radically adaptable.
