The ATF released new guidance, drawing more first-time buyers toward firearm suppressors that cut recoil, nearly erase muzzle blast and lower noise to protect hearing. These attachments can change a rifle’s point of impact, run extremely hot and raise backpressure on gas-operated guns. Subsonic loads in .22 LR, 9mm and .300 Blackout often deliver the quietest results, while a typical AR-15 in .223 or 5.56 stays louder than many shooters expect. Choice also turns on caliber fit, size, weight, mounts, firearm type and intended use, not sound ratings alone.
