Proof Research unveils exponential twist rifling, claims major gains in barrel life and accuracy

Listen to Article

Proof Research has introduced what it calls PXT (Proof exponential twist) rifling, an evolution of the long-established gain-twist concept. The company says the new rifling profile, combined with rounded lands, allows projectiles to be driven harder before jacket failure occurs, translating into documented barrel-life improvements of 30–100 % in testing. Host John Patton called the potential doubling of barrel life “kind of insane,” while also noting repeatable 20–50 % reductions in group size during controlled accuracy trials.

Key Specifications

  • Available in AR-platform barrels (11.5–24 in) in .223 Wylde, 6 ARC and 6.5 Creedmoor; MSRP $1,350.
  • Bolt-action and pre-fit options cover .223 Rem, 22 Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, 7 PRC, 7 mm Backcountry, .308 Win, 300 Win Mag and 300 PRC; also $1,350.
  • Designed to pair with high-pressure cartridges such as the 7 mm Backcountry running roughly 80,000 psi.

Pros and Cons

  • Pros: Substantially extended barrel life; tighter groups; compatibility with next-generation high-pressure ammunition.
  • Cons: Price is more than double that of many conventional premium barrels, raising questions about cost-effectiveness if real-world longevity gains fall short of claims.

Patton summed up industry curiosity: “If we see improved barrel life, improved consistency, and even improved accuracy, this could be wild for the entire industry.” The barrels are shipping now; independent verification of the advertised performance gains is still pending.
