Engineers at FN in Herstal, Belgium created the EVOLYS belt-fed machine gun to cut mass. At 5.5 kg the 5.56x45mm NATO model is roughly two kilograms lighter than a Minimi, and the 7.62x51mm NATO model is 6.2 kg, with rifle-like balance plus a semi-automatic selector setting. A patented side feed lets users load a belt with one hand and frees a continuous top rail for optics, as shown with soldiers in a TFB Photo of the Day.
