Oregon ranks 12th nationally for gun safety statutes according to Everytown for Gun Safety, whose scores rest only on how restrictive the rules are. The state nevertheless recorded four mass shootings in the current year. On October 15 a 16-year-old scaled a fence at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, fired a pump-action shotgun his mother had bought through locked glass doors, and killed three children plus a teacher before another teacher tackled him and a parent who followed him inside fatally shot the attacker. Advocacy groups still say Oregon must add further protections. Alliance for a Safe Oregon director Amie Wexler said a required safety course might have prompted the mother to keep the firearm away from the teenager.
