NSSF, ATF, DOJ Emphasize ‘Don’t Lie for the Other Guy’

The joint NSSF-ATF-DOJ push to revive “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy” is less a fresh idea than a rebranded reminder that the paperwork side of the gun business is now under a microscope. With the Biden-era pistol-brace rule, the pistol-grip shotgun guidance, and the surge in FFL enforcement actions, the agencies are betting that a public-service campaign will look friendlier than another round of letters threatening license revocations. For dealers already buried in eForm delays and 4473 audits, the message lands as both helpful and slightly ironic: the same bureaucracy that keeps moving the regulatory goalposts is now asking the industry to police its own customers more aggressively.

What the campaign quietly underscores is how much legal exposure has shifted downstream. Straw-purchase prosecutions used to focus on the buyer; today an FFL who misses the “obvious” signs can face the same felony exposure, plus the loss of livelihood. That reality has already prompted many shops to adopt in-house scripts, video disclaimers, and even refusal-to-sell logs that go well beyond the statutory minimum. The 2A community should read this as both a compliance necessity and a political signal—DOJ is choosing education theater over statutory reform, which means the paperwork trap will remain a favored enforcement tool until Congress or the courts step in.

Longer term, the campaign’s success will be measured not by public-service-announcement airtime but by whether it actually reduces prohibited-person acquisitions or simply generates more paper trails for future audits. Either way, the takeaway for gun owners and dealers is the same: know the red flags, document the refusals, and remember that the safest transfer is still the one that never triggers a second look from the very agency now smiling from the poster.
