Front Line Friday this week, brought to you by Dead Air Silencers, covers K9 patrol equipment that supports handlers and dogs throughout their working lives. Agencies spend 8000 to 15000 dollars on each dog plus 6 to 10 weeks of handler school but frequently treat the surrounding gear as an afterthought purchased in fragments.

The column addresses handler protection, canine first aid, vehicle configuration, and equipment linking their safety, noting that heat alarms such as AceK9 Hot-N-Pop and Criminalistics systems from Ray Allen plus kennel inserts from Havis or AceK9 help prevent deaths from parked-vehicle heat that outnumber those caused by suspects. Suppressors on duty rifles protect dogs hearing, a working asset more sensitive to blast than humans and impossible to shield with muffs in the field, which agencies should include when making the case for suppressors on K9 handler rifles.
