Dolly Parton has died, prompting a deep sense of loss across Tennessee. The singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist shaped more than country music through her career and giving.

She helped turn a modest Smoky Mountains venue into Dollywood, which has ranked as the nation’s most popular amusement park for four consecutive years. Her Imagination Library delivered more than 360 million free books to children through age five around the world.

After 2016 wildfires in Sevier County, she launched the My People Fund, sending $1,000 a month for five months to every family that lost its main home, followed by a further $5,000 from donations, and she provided $200,000 for local fire departments’ equipment and training.
