Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 38 2.0: Affordable Lightweight Revolver Refresh
The week’s top release is Smith & Wesson’s updated Bodyguard 38 2.0 revolver, a .38 Special +P five-shot wheelgun with a 1.9-inch stainless steel barrel. Weighing just 14.2 ounces—six ounces lighter than the Shield X pistol—it features an aluminum frame with polymer cladding, an integrated U-notch rear sight, orange front dot, slim grip, and ambidextrous top-rear cylinder release. At an MSRP of $449, it’s the company’s most affordable revolver and among its cheapest handguns overall.
- Pros: Ultra-lightweight for easy carry, improved sights over prior gen, ambidextrous controls, budget-friendly pricing.
- Cons: Host Jon Patton notes personal reservations about super lightweight revolvers for EDC, questioning if .38 Special suits daily carry.
‘Is .38 special as a carry gun thing right for you? Personally, I’m not a fan of super lightweight revolvers, but I know plenty of folks that do carry a J-Frame or something similar every day,’ Patton said.
Colt Revives Boa, Adds Rose Gold 1911; SIG Refreshes Classics
Colt brought back the limited-run Boa revolver in partnership with CNC Firearms, offering 4.25-inch and 6-inch .357 Magnum six-shot models with rosewood grips, brass bead front sight, and wood display box. MSRP is $2,000—$300 more than the blued Python—targeting collectors despite similarities to existing models. Colt also unveiled a rose gold .38 Super 1911 with 5-inch barrel, nine-round mags, high polish finish, and pearl grips at $1,700 MSRP.
SIG updated the P226 X5 Classic with a 5-inch bull barrel, 20-round 9mm mags, SIG LOK optic cut, adjustable AX3 trigger, cocobolo Hogue grips, and magwell (MSRP $2,300). Additional SIG releases include a stainless P365 X-Macro slide and rose P322. ‘It looks fantastic if you ask me. I think the 226 is a great gun,’ Patton remarked.
