Chicago Mayor Johnson said it is hard to take President Donald Trump seriously on local violence because Trump is cutting federal work that could help make communities safer.

Police are still investigating a Saturday night attack they called the city’s biggest mass shooting of the year. Officials said at least two people in dark clothes and ski masks fired into a crowd about 11:30 p.m., and someone in the group shot back. Detectives are gathering camera footage to identify those involved.

Trump said Chicago crime has never been worse, claimed 41 people were shot and three died over the weekend, and said he is waiting for Johnson or Illinois Governor JB Pritzker to invite federal help.
