CDC Data Challenges Gun-Control Claim That Firearms Are Leading Cause of Death for Children

The Second Amendment Foundation used CDC WONDER provisional 2025 mortality files to report 4,140 unintentional-injury deaths among Americans ages 1 to 17, compared with 2,099 firearm-related deaths in the same group. National Center for Health Statistics rankings listed accidents first, then suicide at 1,748 and homicide at 1,501; firearms appear only as a mechanism, not a standalone cause. Those 2,099 firearm deaths comprised 1,130 homicides, 800 suicides, and 97 accidents, and 1,793 of them involved ages 13 to 17. Motor-vehicle crashes equaled the firearm total at 2,099, while all transport accidents reached 2,223. The group said mixing intents and adding 18- and 19-year-olds inflates childhood counts used to press limits on lawful owners, and Bruen still requires historical tradition rather than contemporary death tallies to restrict Second Amendment conduct.
