A gun safety organization started by former Arizona Democratic representative Gabby Giffords is committing $10 million to advertising against Republicans, opening in three contests and intending to add more soon.
It is placing $1 million against former representative Mike Rogers in Michigan’s Senate race, $850,000 at the outset against Virginia representative Jen Kiggans, and $350,000 against New Jersey representative Tom Kean Jr., with four extra House contests planned. The spots fault those Republicans for gun-industry donations, votes against stricter firearms rules, and risks to officers, using Michigan shooting headlines against Rogers and a retired officer against Kiggans.
Executive director Emma Brown said Democratic firm Global Strategy Group polling on public-safety worry and support for tighter gun rules guided the buys, which also aim to help Democrats such as Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan. Giffords, wounded in a 2011 shooting, has already aided more than 20 candidates this cycle and is appearing this week for North Carolina Senate candidate Roy Cooper.
