Benjamin Smith of Thatcher set a new Idaho length record for a released brown trout after taking one from Franklin County’s Bear River on August 28. The fish beat by half an inch the mark Caroline Langdale posted on the South Fork Snake River in May 2026; both exceeded 30 inches, a size seldom seen statewide.
The same river also holds native cutthroat plus rainbow trout. Idaho Fish and Game credits total length from snout tip to tail end and requires the fish to swim away alive.
