On October 1, 2026, the Army assigned more than 600 soldiers in Huntsville, Alabama, to a new 40D occupational specialty focused on tactical space operations. Those troops now serve in the newly formed Army Space Operations branch as the service’s latest personnel dedicated to the space domain.

Almost 3,000 soldiers applied for the specialty, and more than 600 were chosen.
