A licensed Bend adult halted a 16-year-old at Silver Rail Elementary on 15 October 2026 after the teen killed 5-, 8- and 11-year-old pupils and a teacher. The attacker used a pump shotgun on a parking vehicle near 12:59 p.m. then through locked doors, critically injuring a 7-year-old and 54-year-old teacher; the adult followed inside and killed him, with police arriving three minutes after 911. Federal sources said more deaths were averted and Gov. Tina Kotek praised it as heroic despite a ban on campus firearms except unloaded ones in locked cars.
