Chris Morris launched a yearly Texas coast tradition five years ago by taking his son Grant, then turning 13, on a night flounder gigging trip. They booked Capt. Joe Clouse, who runs Capt. Joe’s Flounder Ventures from Aransas Pass near Rockport, and now Morris plus friends return annually with Grant, who is 18. Clouse mounts lights on the boat bow and lowers another set into the water, then eases along flats so the group can scan the bottom for camouflaged fish outlines or eyes. He furnishes all gear after 30 years of gigging, making the outing suitable for children and novices because it involves spotting rather than casting. Texas sets a five-fish daily limit of 15 inches minimum, closes gigging from November 1 through December 14 to protect spawners, and requires a saltwater fishing license.
