California Department of Fish and Wildlife officers arrested five people for taking California spiny lobsters at Goleta Pier in Santa Barbara County during the two weeks before the Oct. 2 recreational season began. Patrols recovered 43 lobsters, 28 of them undersized, from coolers, containers, and a vehicle, with alleged violations of fishing out of season, keeping animals below the 3¼-inch body-shell minimum measured from the rear of the eye socket excluding the tail, and exceeding the seven-per-person limit. Officers returned every lobster to the ocean alive.
