Fishing in Quebec: How to Plan a Trip for Brook Trout, Walleye and Pike

▶
Listen to Article

Quebec contains nearly three million lakes and rivers and stands out for brook trout. Travelers from the U.S. Northeast and Midwest reach private camps, cabins and remote waters at varied costs through outfitters, Sépaq reserves or public zecs.

Kate Nadeau-Mercier and Martin Bourget documented trips across the region for Aventure Chasse Pêche during its 21st season. Officials count almost 600 outfitters, 13 wildlife reserves under Sépaq and 63 zecs over nearly 48,000 square kilometres. Brook trout, called omble de fontaine, attracts about 700,000 anglers who take roughly 16 million fish each year, and live baitfish have been illegal since 2017.
