10 Invasive Species Threatening U.S. Lakes, Rivers and Fisheries

Listen to Article

Biologists confirmed a live zebra mussel in Utah’s Colorado River in September 2026, downstream of an established population in Colorado. The find heightens worry because the species multiplies quickly, hitchhikes on boats, and is nearly impossible to wipe out after it takes hold. The river supplies water to communities, farms, and recreation sites across the dry West.

Invasive mussels, carp, plants, and other organisms nationwide disrupt food webs, harm native fish, clog pipes, and raise management costs. Prevention through cleaning, draining, and drying boats and gear remains far more effective than later eradication.
