Barnes Bullets said former owner Randy Brooks has died. He and his wife Coni bought the firm in 1974 after Fred Barnes started it in 1932 from a Bayfield, Colorado, basement, then relocated it to American Fork, Utah.
Brooks formed the concept of an expanding hunting bullet made only of copper while hunting brown bears in Alaska in fall 1985. Field tests of early versions led the company to introduce the X Bullet in 1989.
He stayed in contact with the business after Remington acquired it in 2009.
