UC Davis Centers for Violence Prevention began a project that reviews California firearm transaction records. The work tests a large scale threat assessment method built on purchase data. Researchers will study buying patterns among mass shooters and people who commit firearm crimes. They will also construct models meant to flag individuals at extreme risk of later committing those crimes.

The team will combine the records with other information and apply machine learning to look for patterns in purchases by mass killers.
