A study from the UC Davis Centers for Violence Prevention interviewed 24 people who received Extreme Risk Protection Orders in California between 2016 and 2020. Two researchers analyzed transcripts of conversations held from March through November 2024 after locating the subjects via court records and internet searches, which remain public in the state. Just 48 percent of those interviewed received a final order, yet temporary orders still caused housing and employment problems for many. Two of the 24 believed the order prevented an act of violence, while several said they and their families became far less likely to exercise Second Amendment rights. California provides no mental health services once firearms are taken, and director Garen Wintemute said hearing from respondents can help identify practical improvements in how the law is applied while maintaining the aim of preventing violence.
