Stop Harassing FFL Dealers Over the NFA Changes

Listen to Article

The ATF’s latest NFA rule tweak has turned the usual online outrage machine into a full-blown witch hunt, and the people catching the worst of it are the very FFLs who have to navigate the new paperwork minefield. Instead of giving dealers a grace period to figure out how the agency wants forms filled out this week versus last week, keyboard warriors are already posting screenshots of “non-compliant” ads and demanding the ATF come down like a hammer. That’s not advocacy; that’s volunteering your local gun shop as tribute while the rest of us still don’t know whether the new interpretations will survive the first court challenge.

What gets lost in the pile-on is that FFLs operate under the same shifting guidance we all do—only with the added risk of license revocation if they guess wrong. The rule change itself is still dripping with ambiguities about how “readily convertible” applies to formerly off-the-books items, and the agency has yet to issue the clarifying guidance it promised. Dealers who try to stay ahead of the curve by posting updated notices or pulling inventory are accused of “rolling over,” while those who wait for official word are labeled obstructionists. Either way, the customer base suffers because fewer FFLs are willing to handle NFA transfers at all.

The smarter play for the 2A community is to treat this moment like the regulatory fog it is: document everything, keep receipts, and direct energy toward the lawsuits already in motion rather than at the counter staff who just want to keep the lights on. Harassing the dealer who’s still sorting out whether a Form 1 is now a Form 4 in disguise doesn’t slow the ATF; it simply shrinks the number of places law-abiding citizens can exercise their rights. If the goal is a sustainable fight, the target should stay on the regulators who wrote the rule, not the retailers forced to interpret it on the fly.
