Sponsor of VA’s AR-15 Ban Tells Prosecutors to Stop ‘Tough Guy Posturing’

Listen to Article

The sponsor of Virginia’s proposed AR-15 ban is now lecturing prosecutors to drop the “tough guy posturing,” a line that lands with extra irony when the same politician wants to turn millions of law-abiding owners into felons overnight. By framing enforcement as swagger rather than principle, the bill’s author inadvertently admits the political reality: these restrictions are designed more for headlines than for any measurable reduction in crime. Prosecutors who actually have to stand in front of judges and juries know that adding another unenforceable layer to an already confusing patchwork of gun laws simply diverts resources from prosecuting the violent felons who already ignore every existing statute.

For the 2A community the episode is a useful reminder that the real battle is not over hardware lists but over political will and prosecutorial discretion. When anti-gun legislators simultaneously demand new bans and then complain that cops are being too aggressive, they telegraph that the goal is symbolic disarmament of the compliant, not incapacitation of predators. That contradiction gives pro-rights advocates a clean talking point: if the people writing the laws are uncomfortable with their own enforcement mechanisms, the laws themselves are the problem. The faster Virginia voters internalize that message, the sooner they can reject measures that trade the rights of the responsible for the illusion of safety.
