The state already boasts some of the nation’s strictest gun laws, yet its major cities continue to post eye-watering violent-crime numbers. Rather than confront the revolving-door bail policies, under-prosecuted retail theft rings, and sanctuary-city non-cooperation that actually drive those numbers, Sacramento doubles down on the one constituency that reliably obeys the law: gun owners. The result is a policy feedback loop in which each new restriction is sold as the missing piece that will finally make the previous restrictions work.

For the 2A community, the message is unmistakable: compliance is not a shield. Every magazine ban, roster requirement, and “assault weapon” definition has been justified as a narrow, “common-sense” measure; each has been followed by the next. The pattern suggests that the goal is not crime reduction but the gradual normalization of prohibition. Law-abiding Californians who once believed they could thread the needle—registering this rifle, pinning that stock—are discovering that the goalposts move with each election cycle.
