California Representative Kevin Mullin has introduced Garrett’s Law, which would classify high-powered lethal airguns as firearms so they fall under the same federal rules as conventional guns. Giffords and March For Our Lives have backed the measure.

The legislation follows the suicide of Mullin constituent Garrett Edwards, who faced mental-health restrictions that barred him from buying a firearm yet obtained a lethal airgun over the internet. Licensed gun makers and dealers already must run background checks that exclude felons and people with certain severe mental conditions, while airguns stay under Consumer Product Safety Commission consumer-product rules rather than Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives weapons rules.

Edwards’s mother Ann Edwards, Giffords executive director Emma Brown, and March For Our Lives co-founder Jaclyn Corin have urged Congress to pass the bill.
