Activist Says ‘Responsible’ Firearm Owners Have Nothing to Fear From Gun Control

Listen to Article

The activist’s reassurance that “responsible” gun owners have nothing to fear is the same rhetorical sleight-of-hand the gun-control movement has used for decades: define “responsible” so narrowly that it excludes the very people who actually exercise the right. Once the law is written, the definition expands—background-check expansions become registration, registration becomes confiscation, and the “responsible” carve-out shrinks to a vanishing point. The 2A community has watched this progression in state after state; the only variable is how long the bait-and-switch takes.

What the activist never explains is who gets to decide the new definition of responsibility. Every time a legislature adds a “sensitive places” list, a magazine limit, or a training mandate, the circle of acceptable ownership contracts. The people who stocked up on standard-capacity magazines before a ban are suddenly “irresponsible”; the collector whose grandfathered semi-auto now needs a permit-to-purchase is recast as a latent threat. Far from protecting lawful owners, the policy manufactures new classes of criminals overnight—people who were following the rules until the rules changed beneath them.

The deeper implication is philosophical, not tactical. If your right to keep and bear arms exists only so long as someone else deems you “responsible,” then it is not a right at all; it is a privilege revocable by political fashion. The 2A community’s consistent reply has been that the Second Amendment is the failsafe against exactly this kind of mission creep. When activists promise safety in exchange for enumerated rights, history suggests the bill comes due in the next legislative session, not in the crime statistics.
