A Bearing Arms columnist who has written on firearms policy since 2017 challenged an Australian opinion article that opposed extra armed personnel in public spaces. That article allowed that lawmakers might need more protection at home and work yet objected to New South Wales stationing officers with long-range rifles on corners and to private armed guards at events, asserting that arming law-abiding people simply produces more armed criminals.
The columnist observed that the Bondi Beach attackers used legally obtained firearms and that violent offenders still obtain guns even under the most restrictive regimes. He pointed to a surge in knife attacks in the United Kingdom after private ownership was largely ended and noted that the 1968 Gun Control Act in the United States arrived amid a homicide spike that receded only after the assault-weapon ban expired in 2006.
