The Trace Takes Aim (Again) at California Sporting Goods Chain

The Trace’s latest hit piece on Turner Outdoors is less journalism than it is a familiar script: take a handful of ATF trace numbers, sprinkle in the word “trafficking,” and hope the public forgets that traces are not crime-gun counts and that retailers are required by law to sell only to people who pass background checks. What the story never mentions is that California already has the nation’s most labyrinthine roster of “approved” handguns, universal background checks, a ten-day waiting period, micro-stamping mandates, and a de-facto handgun roster that shrinks every year. If a retailer in that environment is still moving product, the most obvious explanation is customer demand, not a shadowy pipeline to criminals.

The real story is regulatory failure dressed up as retailer malfeasance. California’s own Department of Justice has spent years tightening the vise on lawful purchasers—most recently by forcing every dealer to use the California Firearms Application Reporting System—yet the state’s unsolved shooting rate remains stubbornly high in cities that also happen to have the strictest local gun-control ordinances in the country. Rather than confront the policy contradictions, The Trace and its allies would rather subpoena a chain whose only sin appears to be selling firearms that law-abiding Californians still want to buy. The implication for the 2A community is clear: if retailers can be publicly flogged for simply obeying the law while their customers are demonized for exercising a constitutional right, the next regulatory step will not be aimed at criminals; it will be aimed at the dwindling number of FFLs willing to stay in business under such terms.
