Jane Doe messaged Jonathan Newell less than two days after the alleged Cornell group assault to thank him for reaching out and to note that her own memory of the night was also hazy from heavy intoxication. Newell had first apologized, saying he and Matthew Ingalls regretted being too impaired to end the gathering before it grew chaotic. She answered that the sexual activity itself was not illegal, she had enjoyed being with both men, and no one else had any right to judge or shame them over it.
TMZ later obtained the complete exchange after ABC News and the New York Times had published only fragments. Newell was subsequently expelled from Nova Southeastern University once the civil suit named him, and Ingalls left the country for Dubai after being identified.
