Why the New Gun Owner Demographics Are Good News for Gun Rights

Listen to Article

Women have become a larger share of U.S. firearm owners. RAND reported in September that they were nearly half of recent first-time buyers, while General Social Survey data put adult women's personal ownership at 16 percent in 2024, up from 10 percent in 2018, and their share of all owners at 32 percent versus 22 percent earlier, with men's rates little changed.

Ownership rose among women in almost every race, age, marital, education and income category after 2018, frequently outpacing men in the same groups. African American women in metro Atlanta have joined clubs, sought training, and exercised Second Amendment rights in greater numbers. Bass Reeves Gun Club, tied to NAAGA, reports about 700 members and more interest from Black women, while a majority-Black A Girl and A Gun chapter in Atlanta neared 200 after tripling in roughly two years.
