Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones filed a solo amicus brief with the Supreme Court in Viramontes. The document argues AR-15s are not Second Amendment Arms.
Jones analogizes them to machineguns already held restrictable as dangerous and unfit for self-defense, differing mainly in initial semiautomatic rather than automatic operation. He points to bump stocks, auto sears, and other rate-increasing or converting devices, along with Cook County’s readily convertible claim.
Jones adds that AR-15s are unlike common Founding-era household guns, which were usually single-shot muzzle loaders, and that they were developed in the 1950s and 1960s.
