Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence broke free around the left side late in a 35-6 win over the New England Patriots and stopped to kneel at the one-yard line with just under nine minutes left.

Lawrence joked to CBS Sports afterward that he wanted teammate Bhayshul Tuten to score a touchdown, which Tuten did on the next snap. To local media he described the choice as a mistake, saying he had been thinking in four-minute-offense terms, checked the clock only after kneeling, saw roughly eight minutes remaining, and had hoped to limit New England’s remaining chances after they called timeout.

Some fans online rejected that account, citing the score and time, a possible anytime-touchdown wager at plus-290 to plus-300 odds, and calling for scrutiny of illicit betting or which spread the play protected.
