An Oregon resident recently published a letter in The Oregonian proposing multiple restrictions on firearms, including government approval of ownership reasons, storage only at shooting ranges, hunter education courses, gun registration, and matching the level of regulation applied to abortion.
Cam Edwards, a journalist who has covered the Second Amendment for two decades, wrote that the Constitution treats firearm possession as a right covering home storage and public carry rather than a privilege requiring justification. Oregon law imposes no waiting periods, registries, background checks or purchase permits on adult abortion access, and allows those 15 and older to consent without a parent. Edwards stated he would accept regulating guns under the same standards Oregon uses for abortion.
