A Van Zandt County deputy died Tuesday night after gunfire during an attempt, alongside Canton officers, to take into custody a man wanted for aggravated assault, including against an officer. Adam Sherifi was hit along with one city officer as the suspect shot from inside a residence. Both wounded officers went to a hospital, where Sherifi did not survive. Authorities later found the wanted man dead of a gunshot inside the house, and Sheriff Kevin Bridger did not specify whether the round came from police or the man himself. Sherifi is survived by his wife and three children, including an infant born in September, and Malakoff Mayor Nicole Mason-Driver offered prayers for the family's strength.
