Former Obama White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel appeared Sunday on NBC Meet the Press and said Republicans tied to Mitt Romney and John McCain have left the GOP. He predicted that Democratic majorities in the Senate and House would follow from that split even though those voters have not switched parties.
Emanuel said Democrats must decide between 2026 and 2027 how to turn a wide coalition into lasting change rather than a one-time vote, citing surveys of Hispanic voters and independents. He called for ethics reforms covering all three branches of government to restore public confidence because neither party currently holds a clean reputation.
He also urged raising the federal minimum wage to twenty dollars by 2030, noting the last increase came after Democrats won the House in 2006 twenty years earlier, and barring social media for children under sixteen as other countries already do.
