POTD: From Canvas to Camera – Bazeilles 1870 Remembered

Listen to Article

A photo of the day presentation places an 1870 oil work beside a recent photograph that copies its layout.

Alphonse de Neuville showed French marine and artillery troops defending an inn during the Battle of Bazeilles on 31 August and 1 September 1870 as bigger Bavarian forces approached. Those soldiers faced greater numbers and dwindling rounds yet stayed in place until none remained.

Members of the French Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment later copied the arrangement with present day carbines rather than older rifles inside a debris filled room and positioned a hurt man against the wall. Alphonse de Neuville who lived from 1835 to 1885 painted the original while the 3e RPIMa took the photograph.
