French police are examining whether someone tampered with the tracks after a regional train left the rails in Normandy and hurt 44 passengers.

The Rouen-to-Caen service carried 186 people when it left the rails Friday night at Cléon in Seine-Maritime. Investigators found a section of rail on the line and treat it as a likely factor. An 18-year-old woman was flown by helicopter to Rouen University Hospital. Officials have not decided whether the cause was an accident or deliberate damage, and prosecutors have not drawn conclusions.
