Sheffield Lake, Ohio police have kept a 1918 Colt Vickers World War I aircraft machine gun in storage since 1989 after seizing it unregistered under the NFA during a welfare check. The ATF in 2022 said even a museum gift required cutting the gun, which officials declined to preserve its original condition. They failed to transfer it to a federal aviation museum in Dayton and are seeking the Smithsonian as a home.
