The Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested Lawrence McGee, 44, of Quitman and charged the city’s police chief with felony theft by taking and violation of oath of office. Brooks County sheriff officials asked the state agency on February 3, 2026 to look into a theft claim against him. Investigators said a handgun donated in January 2026 to the Quitman Police Department for a raffle tied to a regional traffic enforcement meeting was kept by McGee and never placed in the raffle.
