Oregon Governor Tina Kotek is directing the state education department to have schools inform parents of the mandatory gun storage law that requires locking unused firearms away from minors.
She declared an emergency covering Bend-La Pine Schools plus High Desert Education Service District, allowing skipped instructional time minimums during recovery.
A 16-year-old killed three students and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend on Oct. 15 with a shotgun his mother reportedly purchased. Investigators have not said if the mother violated the storage law and Kotek said she had no extra information.
