On October 22, 2026, governments defending rifle restrictions submitted their first Supreme Court briefs in Second Amendment Foundation lawsuits. The Court this summer took up Viramontes v. Cook County, filed in 2021 against a Cook County, Illinois ban on widely owned rifles such as the AR-15 that preceded a similar state law, plus Grant v. Higgins against Connecticut limits on semi-automatic rifles identified by name or features. Arguments are scheduled for December 2, with the Firearms Policy Coalition and two individuals joining the Illinois case and the Connecticut Citizens Defense League plus three individuals joining the other.
