New York’s Mandatory Storage Rule Officially Gets Even Dumber

Governor Kathy Hochul signed two measures Wednesday. Francesco's Law under A.1962-B and S.9629 now requires owners to secure any rifle, shotgun or firearm not in their immediate control with a lockable container that blocks unauthorized access and resists fire, impact and tampering or with a device that prevents firing, even in homes without children, taking effect in 90 days except for police on duty. Companion bills S.7236 and A.7983 immediately deny ammunition to buyers barred from rifles or shotguns by New York, federal or extreme-risk rules, and unattended vehicle guns must be unloaded, locked out of sight and never in a glove compartment.
