Fairriona Magee of The Trace reported this week that six million U.S. children live with people who use lead-based firearm ammunition without post-shooting hygiene, which she said leaves those children vulnerable to lead. Magee, a public health reporter in her first paid job after college, attributed comments to Harvard researcher Christian Hoover, who also lists himself as co-investigator on a firearm exposure research team at the T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Hoover described the findings as suggesting a larger risk than people realize and recommended changing clothes after shooting, leaving gear outside the home, and treating lead ammunition use as toxic.
