Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed would not say in a Monday interview whether the constitutional guarantee of keeping and bearing arms should be removed, after he had endorsed that change in a 2023 video later made private.

Pressed on whether he still favored swapping that guarantee for a healthcare guarantee, he replied that more people worry about seeing a doctor than owning a firearm and suggested polling the public. He added that a healthcare guarantee would likely ease those worries and would be a positive outcome.

The 2023 video, posted after a Nashville school shooting that killed six, proposed amending the Constitution to substitute a healthcare guarantee for the arms provision. El-Sayed or his campaign later restricted the video; an analysis found he had restricted at least 160 YouTube videos and removed some social-media posts, though archived transcripts remain available.
