Martinez Long, then 19, fatally shot Cameron Watkins at Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, Michigan, on July 3, 2026, after Watkins killed Keonte Seaborn, wounded another person during a struggle, and kept firing through the mall. Authorities treated Longs use of lethal force as lawful self-defense and brought no charges for it.

Michigan required a person to be 21 before issuing a concealed-carry permit, so Long lacked one when he hid the handgun. He had no prior record, was convicted of unlawful concealment after a plea, and received two years of probation from Chief Judge Sam Salamey. The judge criticized Long for bringing a firearm into the shopping center at all and asked why anyone would need one there for safety.
