If Gun Bans Are Off the Table, What’s the Next Gun Control Strategy?

Listen to Article

The next frontier in gun control isn’t about banning guns outright—it’s about strangling the industry through regulation, litigation, and financial pressure. With courts increasingly skeptical of outright bans, anti-gun advocates are shifting to “death by a thousand cuts”: pushing for insurance mandates, microstamping requirements, ammunition taxes, and “smart gun” mandates that make legal ownership more expensive and technically complex. These measures don’t need to confiscate firearms to achieve their goal—they just need to make the legal market so burdensome that manufacturers exit, FFLs close, and law-abiding citizens quietly stop participating. The 2A community should recognize this as regulatory warfare, not policy debate, and treat every new compliance cost as a potential choke point.

This evolution also exposes a deeper strategic shift: gun control is moving from the legislative branch to the administrative state and the boardroom. Expect more pressure on banks and insurers to “de-bank” the firearms industry, more ATF reinterpretations of existing statutes, and more attempts to import foreign regulatory models under the guise of “public health.” For gun owners, the takeaway is clear—winning in court is necessary but no longer sufficient. The fight is expanding into the financial system, the regulatory code, and public perception. If the Second Amendment community wants to stay ahead, it must treat these indirect attacks with the same urgency once reserved for magazine bans and assault weapon restrictions.
