John Oliver discussed Luigi Mangione on Last Week Tonight on Sunday. Mangione pleaded guilty to killing UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson on a New York City street in 2024.

Oliver said many people struggled to fully denounce the killing because of widespread anger at UnitedHealthcare. He noted the firm dominates much of American health coverage and often rejects claims, including a cervical cancer patient whose six oncologists recommended proton therapy that the insurer refused as outside its standard of care. He argued the company should not be permitted to continue and urged the United States to adopt a national health system similar to Canada’s.
